External peer reviews are performed by physician reviewers NOT affiliated with the same hospital or practice group as the subject physician, resulting in unbiased, independent peer reviews. The Medprex peer review exchange platform provides inexpensive, timely external peer reviews from matching board certified physicians.

What are cases?

Cases are incident-based peer reviews performed when a concern is reported or an adverse indicator is present. Medprex supports both internal cases and external cases performed on the Exchange.

What are audits?

Physician performance audits are performed periodically on charts randomly chosen to monitor and improve quality of care. Medprex supports both internal audits and external audits performed on the Exchange.

What are Medprex-powered Regional Peer Review Exchanges?

Hospitals and physician groups use Medprex to form and operate a
regional peer review exchange with other facilities. Our secure
Internet-based platform gives your facility access to unbiased,
independent peer reviews from matching board certified providers to

How is this different from other independent peer review companies?

Hospitals typically pay $1,000 to $5,000 for each independent peer review performed by consulting firms that employ physician reviewers. This process is not only expensive, but is also manual. Therefore hospitals typically handle peer review processes internally, except for limited circumstances relating to cases with heighten financial or legal risk. Medprex provides a low-cost alternative ($25 fee for per audit and $50 fee per case, plus reviewer stipends) that allows hospitals to exchange review submissions on our secure platform for timely independent peer reviews.

How much does it cost a hospital to join and participate in the Medprex Peer Review Exchange?

A hospital pays no start-up or annual fees to participate in the Medprex Peer Review Exchange. Hospitals only pay a submission fee and reviewer stipend on a per-peer review submission. Meanwhile, a hospital can elect to receive stipend payments for exchange reviews completed by employed physicians. These payments are performed electronically via ACH payment processing

Who are the reviewing physicians?

Our Physician Reviewers are board certified physicians of the same specialty as the subject physician being reviewed. Each physician reviewer is provided a secure online interface where specialty-specific open cases and audits can be picked up, reviewed, and findings entered.

How are Physician Reviewers compensated?

Physician Reviewers are compensated on a stipend-per-review basis. Stipends start at $50 per review and can vary based on specialty and specialty queue length (the number of active cases and audits in the exchange). These payments are performed electronically via ACH payment processing. Medprex offers participating hospitals the option of being paid the stipends earned by employed physician reviewers.
